SÛR - çirokeke min heye

nsight into the city centre of Kurdish Diyarbakır in a state of emergency

SÛR – this is the name of the city centre of the town Diyarbakır (Kurdish: Amed) with over a million inhabitants in the Kurdish Southeast of Turkey, the region bordering Syria and Iraq. Sûr is also the name of the historic fortifications around the city centre. In winter 2015/16, the fortifcation gates were closed for over three monthes, the centre was marooned – the Turkish state had imposed a curfew. Eren Karakus has documented this time of isolation in his home town with a mobile phone - taking photos in the occupied city was prohibited.

The exhibition takes place from 27 to 29 October 2016 at the Palexpo in Geneva as part of the  UNIA-Kongresses 2016.

Photo documentation: Eren Karakus

Exhibition curators: Anina Jendreyko and Cordula Portmann.
