The Volksbühne Basel, founded in Basel, has grown out of a group of pioneering artists – theatre people, musicians and dancers who have been dealing with interculture in their artistic work for many years.

Volksbühne Basel understands the diversity of milieus and origins that define urban society today as a wealth that should become visible in cultural life. We want to reinvent popular theatre and fill it with life in a rousing and controversial way.

Interculture is a living reality among us. If we want to understand the dynamics and the border crossings between cultures, then we need both the knowledge of those whose biographies are connected with migration and of the residents whose homeland is inevitably moved along by the movement of the others. The Volksbühne Basel wants to explore new fields of content that critically examine what it means to be an individual in a dynamic society. We seek and explore new contents and styles in a differentiated confrontation with our own identity, with traditions and the reflection on the environment in which we move.

We all carry different cultures within us. Behind the question of origin and home, a space opens up that is full of personal stories. We want to tell these stories, unfold them on stage and make them visible.
